Dear Neighbors,
The turn of the calendar brings us closer to the end of the legislative session and warmer days. As we approach the conclusion of the legislative session next Thursday, my staff and I have been working diligently to ensure the successful passage of several crucial bills. These bills aim to address the pressing issues and concerns of our state.
Diversity is at New York’s core, and June marks Pride Month. Unfortunately, we are currently witnessing a disturbing surge in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and the propagation of discriminatory rhetoric, perpetuating hatred and prejudice in several states nationwide. It is crucial that we persist in embracing and honoring the intersectionality found in Pride Month, a month-long observance that celebrates and commemorates LGBTQIA+ activism and culture. Originating from the historic Stonewall Uprising in June 1969, it has transformed the world over the years. This dedicated period amplifies LGBTQIA+ voices, honors LGBTQIA+ culture, and advocates for LGBTQIA+ rights. In this month, we remember remarkable individuals who have left lasting legacies.
Now, more than ever, the LGBTQIA+ community requires the unwavering support of its allies not just during this month but throughout the year. My team and I are dedicated to standing by the LGBTQIA+ community, providing our support (read the bill of the week section). Let us join forces to foster a world where everyone feels secure and embraced every month of the year.
June is also National Gun Awareness Month, a time when we come together to address the alarming presence of gun violence in our daily lives and communities. As you are aware, I have made it my mission to combat the rise in gun violence, and this month, my team and I began with a powerful vigil and a call to action. We were fortunate to have the support of sponsors such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, North Manhattan Alumnae Chapter, Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action, Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Gays Against Guns, and many others.
However, our efforts to tackle this issue extend beyond the month of June. It is a year-round endeavor that requires the active participation of our community's youth. In the Events section below, you will find more information on how we are engaging and involving our young people in this crucial work.
Rent Guidelines Board Alert
On May 2nd, the Rent Guidelines Board held a Preliminary vote on proposed lease adjustments for rent-stabilized apartments. In a 5-4 vote, the board approved a 2%-5% increase for one-year leases and an even larger 4%-7% increase for two-year leases.
With NYC already having one of the most expensive rental markets, even a small percentage increase in rent could have an unprecedented impact. The decline in rental affordability is severely impacting the ability of young people fresh out of college, parents raising their families, and seniors on fixed incomes to survive.
It's urgent that New Yorkers attend the next public meeting of the Rent Guidelines Board and have your voices heard:
-
Monday, June 5, 2023
5 P.M. – 8 P.M.
- Public Hearing (In-Person Public Testimony)
-
Location: Main Theatre of
Hostos Community College/CUNY 450 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10451
If you wish to speak at one of the in-person hearings, you must register to speak and can do so by completing the registration form here.
