Dear Neighbors,

Like many of you, I find myself reflecting deeply on the results of last week's general election. The outcome has left me with a sense of disbelief and, undeniably, profound disappointment. Over the next four years, uncertainty will shadow our city, state, loved ones, and our nation.

However, amid this moment of uncertainty, there is reason to be encouraged. Once again, New Yorkers have demonstrated their strength and unity by re-electing one of the largest Democratic majorities in the State Senate’s history. Even more notably, New Yorkers overwhelmingly approved Proposition 1, enshrining reproductive rights in our State Constitution.

This monumental victory was made possible by the tireless efforts of the State Senate Democratic Majority, who fought to bring it to the ballot. In addition to protecting reproductive rights, Proposition 1 also guarantees protections against discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, and LGBTQ status. Though New York’s anti-discrimination laws are strong, we know that laws alone can be vulnerable to change. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who voted YES for this crucial amendment.

While I am troubled by the challenges ahead, my commitment to serving our state and community remains unwavering. There is much work to be done in Albany—from affordable housing and education to transportation, immigration, and beyond. I promise to continue fighting to protect New York from any threats that may arise.

There are also ways for you to channel your energy and time. Running to serve or even just participating in local meetings—like those of the school board, PEP, CEC, community board, or precinct councils—are local avenues to stay informed and help shape policy. If you’re interested in deeper political involvement, consider attending a meeting of local political groups in your community.

We’ve faced adversity before. Time and again, we have demonstrated our resilience, strength, and compassion. Now, more than ever, we must support one another, remain steadfast, and resist hate in all its forms. In the days, months, and years to come, we will need to draw upon our collective spirit to organize, mobilize, and advocate for justice, our children’s futures, and the wellbeing of our families and neighbors.

Together, let us forge a future for New York that reflects the bravery, unity, and resolve that define us.

In Unity,

RJ

Somos 2024

Last week, I attended the 2024 Somos Conference in Puerto Rico with my colleagues and various community-based organizations. We engaged in valuable workshops, networking, community service, and cultural activities.

This session brought together experts and advocates to discuss crucial reforms in school disciplinary practices, aiming to ensure fair and supportive treatment for every child in New York and to build a system that recognizes each student's potential.

I also had the opportunity to participate in the opening of the New York Founding Childcare Center in San Juan, alongside my dedicated team and esteemed colleagues. This experience reaffirmed our shared commitment to fostering inclusive, supportive environments for all, both in New York and beyond.
