Yesterday, I voted against the Public Protection and General Government Bill (S.8305-C) state budget bill and a measure in it that authorizes the closure of up-to five correctional facilities statewide. During debate, I brought a motion to the floor that would eliminate this closure provision. This amendment was defeated by Senate Democrats in a party-line vote. Given the rise in violence inside correctional facilities and failure of the state to find reuse plans for already closed sites, this is a dangerous, bad decision. April 17 was Honor Flight Day in New York State. To celebrate it, 10 different Honor Flight organizations were at the Capitol for a celebratory reception, including the North Country Honor Flight. It was a true privilege to spend some time with several of our local heroes, welcome them to Albany and express my sincere gratitude for their service during World War II on behalf of our nation. The North Country Honor Flight is one of my favorite area organizations and you can learn more about their mission and endeavors here.

While this week will end with a lengthy, often frustrating state budget debate, it started on a positive note. I was so glad I could welcome elementary schoolers from Warrensburg Central School District. The fifth grade came to explore the Capitol and it was a real treat to be able to take them inside the Senate chamber for a tour. I hope they enjoyed the visit; I know I enjoyed getting to show them around!
