Yesterday, I voted against the Public Protection and General Government Bill (S.8305-C) state budget bill and a measure in it that authorizes the closure of up-to five correctional facilities statewide. During debate, I brought a motion to the floor that would eliminate this closure provision. This amendment was defeated by Senate Democrats in a party-line vote. Given the rise in violence inside correctional facilities and failure of the state to find reuse plans for already closed sites, this is a dangerous, bad decision.
