Happy August! I hope you are having an enjoyable summer. There continue to be many exciting things to do throughout the district. I have included flyers and more information on upcoming events below.

I am happy to share that my office is offering a series of FREE virtual workshops to help residents better understand resources available to them. We are partnering with Manhattan Legal Services on a Virtual Housing Assistance Workshop on August 13th. This workshop will provide the opportunity to learn more about eligibility for Family Homelessness and Eviction Prevention Supplement (FHEPS), CityFHEPS, and the One-Shot Deal (OSD). We are also partnering with Bronx Legal Services on a SNAP Benefits Virtual Presentation on August 17th. Please read below for more information on how to register!

My office remains available to help with any issues you may be facing. You can call us at 212-828-5829, or visit us Monday through Friday, 9am–5pm at 335 E 100th St. My office also hosts weekly off-site constituent hours throughout the district to make it easier for residents to receive assistance closer to home.

Legionnaires’ Disease
Outbreak Update

The NYC Health Department has declared the Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease exposure has ended and the area is safe. My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones and everyone still recovering.

We will continue to monitor the situation and encourage property owners to remain vigilant with cooling tower maintenance. Community Job Fair

Senator Serrano partnered with the New York State Department of Labor to host a Community Job Fair at Lincoln Hospital, connecting residents with employers from a wide range of industries.

More than 600 job seekers attended the event to explore career opportunities and connect with hiring employers. Senator Serrano thanks the participating organizations, employers, and community partners who helped make the event a success.

NOAA Educational Partnership Program Forum

Senator Serrano delivered the keynote address at the 25th Anniversary NOAA Educational Partnership Program (EPP) Education and Science Forum at The City College of New York.

The event celebrated 25 years of expanding educational opportunities and creating pathways into STEM for students from underserved communities. Senator Serrano also recognized the lasting legacy of former Congressman José E. Serrano, whose leadership helped establish the partnership. He congratulates NOAA, The City College of New York, and everyone who has helped expand opportunities for students through the program over the past 25 years.

Opening Remarks at Shakespeare in the Park - The Winter's Tale

Senator Serrano delivered opening remarks before the first performance of The Winter's Tale at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, welcoming audiences to another season of free Shakespeare for New Yorkers.

Drawing on his experience as a former Public Theater staff member and now Chair of the Senate Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation, Senator Serrano reflected on the transformative power of the arts and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring world-class cultural experiences remain accessible to all.

CITYarts Visit with Mayor Mamdani

Senator Serrano joined Mayor Zohran Mamdani and local Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) participants at the Shakespeare Steps in the Bronx to help preserve the vibrant community mural created through CITYarts' Community Identity Program.

The visit highlighted the impact of youth employment and public art in strengthening neighborhoods while giving young people opportunities to develop new skills, express their creativity, and leave a lasting mark on their community.

Jackson Houses Family Day

Senator Serrano attended the Jackson Houses Family Day celebration, where he joined residents for an afternoon of community, music, and family activities.

During the event, he was pleased to recognize Danny Barber, Chair of the NYCHA Citywide Council of Presidents and President of the Jackson Houses Tenant Association, for his continued leadership and dedication to the residents of Jackson Houses.

St Mary’s Family Day and Women of Distinction

Senator Serrano was thrilled to join residents at the St. Mary's Park Houses Family Day celebration and was honored to recognize Dana Elden as his 2026 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction.

The annual recognition honors women who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities. Senator Serrano congratulates Ms. Elden and thanks her for her years of dedicated leadership and service to the residents of St. Mary's Park Houses.

Bronx CB1 Healthy Families

Senator Serrano was happy to participate in Bronx Community Board 1's Healthy Families Resource Fair, connecting with residents and community organizations from across the South Bronx.

The event brought together local service providers and partners to share valuable health, family, and community resources. Senator Serrano appreciates everyone who helped make the event a success.

Harding Park & Franklin Plaza Family Days

Senator Serrano spent the day celebrating with residents at the Harding Park and Franklin Plaza Family Day events.

Both celebrations brought neighbors together for music, food, activities, and community fellowship. Senator Serrano enjoyed connecting with residents and appreciates the tenant leaders, organizers, and volunteers who make these annual traditions possible.
