Did you know that this month has a national thesaurus day celebrating the chief accomplishment and birthday of its writer Peter Mark Roget?

A Thesaurus is a book of words or information about a particular field or set of concepts especially a book of words and their synonyms. Born on January 18, 1779 Peter Mark Roget retired from a successful career in medicine and spent the rest of his life working on Roget's Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases, published in 1852.

Roget's Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases originally contained 15,000 words organized into five primary categories: existence, relation, quantity, number, and time; today, the book is still organized by ideas and concepts as opposed to alphabetically, however, it now includes more than 230,000 words

-If you or someone you know qualifies, you may apply for SNAP (food stamps), Cash Assistance, and Medicaid renewal all at the same time here.

-WIC2Go is a mobile app for New York State WIC recipients. For more information on WIC support, please visit their site or call 844-540-3031.

-For seniors aged 60+ NYC Department for the Aging (DFTA)  provides home delivered meals. You can access them online or call 311 for support, you also can call 212-244-6469 to see if you qualify direct delivery.

-If you are not currently receiving any food benefit (such as Meals on Wheels or SNAP), are unable to get to a grocery store, and do not have anyone to help you, you may qualify for NYC Food Delivery Assistance.

Senator Persaud met with members of the 106th Pct Community Affairs. Many issues were discussed at this meeting of the minds with Commanding Officer Bacchi, Community Affairs Officer Ferguson-Smith and Community Affairs Officer Jaffe.

Giving Back to the community is important. On Manday January 16, in honor of Martin Luther King, Senator Persaud joined JCC of Canarsie, community partners, staffer Sandy, volunteer Val and others for a day of service.

The day started with readings about Dr. Martin Luther King, his connection to the Jewish Community and his struggles for civil rights for black people in America.
Continuing these fights ensures that his work was not in vain.

After the readings and conversation, we prepared packages of fresh produce and other food products and delivered them to seniors.

Thank you to Rabbi Avrohom Hecht for organizing this service project.

On Sunday January 15 Senator Persaud attended and spoke at the inauguration of her new colleague, Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton of the 23rd Senate District.

Also in attendance were Senators Brian Kavanagh, Iwen Chu, and John Liu (bottom left image).

On Saturday January 14 Staffer Sandy and volunteer Kamla represented SD19 at the Doral Health & Wellness Winter Wonderland Spectacular.

Doral Health and Wellness offers a variety of senior citizen wellness care packages including day care facilities and dialysis treatment. 

On Friday January 13 Senator Persaud had the opportunity to meet an amazing group of 8th grade students at JHS 218 James P Sinnott.

Senator Persaud and staffer Sandy were there to present microscopes for the science lab donated by St. Francis College Brooklyn.

The discussion became a lesson about government and the importance of volunteering in your community.
The students had excellent questions and are excited to become volunteers.

On Friday January 13, staffers Christine and Jennifer represented Senator Persaud at the One Brooklyn Health System at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center Annual Martin Luther King Day Food Giveaway.

They assisted with the distribution of fresh produce, dried goods and also gave out SD19 Resource Packets.

This event brought together a plethora of community partners, elected officials/representatives, and volunteers to bring resources to the community while honoring Dr. Martin Luther King’s Legacy.

 Senator Persaud joined her colleagues and delivered greetings at the swearing in Ceremony of Assembly Member Brian Cunningham held at the Brooklyn Children's Museum. Congratulations to Assembly Member Brian Cunningham.

DFTA Bill Payer Program

Do you need help organizing your bills and making sure they are paid on time?

The Bill Payer Program helps adults, 60 years or older, manage their household bills. DFTA has partnered with SilverBills, a financial-technology company, to provide services.

A Bill Payer representative will make a one-time visit to the home to help with budgeting and enrollment. After that, the program will continue to review and process the payment of bills each month and inform the participant of any discrepancies or potential fraud.

DFTA Launches Silver Stars Program

In the Department for the Aging's continued efforts to fight ageism and give older adults the opportunity to continue contributing to the workforce, we launched a called Silver Stars.

Designed for retired civil servants who want to continue working, this program is an opportunity for them to be hired by a City agency where they can earn up to $35,000 working part-time, while continuing to receive benefits from the City's pension system.
