Letitia James

Letitia Ann James (born October 18, 1958) is an American lawyer and politician. She is a member of the Democratic Party and the current Attorney General of New York, having won the 2018 election to succeed appointed Attorney General Barbara Underwood. She is the first African American and first woman to be elected to the position. 

Born and raised in Brooklyn, James obtained her J.D. degree at Howard University in Washington, D.C., after graduating from Lehman College in The Bronx. She worked as a public defender, then on staff in the New York State Assembly, and later as a New York State Assistant Attorney General (Brooklyn Regional Office). 

James served as a member of the New York City Council from 2004 to 2013. She represented the 35th district, which includes the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, parts of Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, and Bedford-Stuyvesant. James chaired the Economic Development and Sanitation Committees and served on several other committees. She was later the New York City Public Advocate from 2013 to 2018. As Public Advocate, she became the first African American woman to be elected to and hold citywide office in New York City. 

James was a candidate in the 2022 New York gubernatorial election. She announced her candidacy on October 29, 2021, and suspended her campaign on December 9, 2021, opting to run for re-election as attorney general instead.

Albany Review

Senator Persaud recently introduced S5625 which relates to pregnant and postpartum individuals and their children's health coverage and information.

This legislation will expand Medicaid coverage services for pregnant and postpartum women and their children for up to 2 years. It would also ask DOH to work with the Department of Social Services to establish a health expense account program for pregnant and postpartum women and create informative pamphlets on maternal depression.

Recently Passed Bill:

Traffic Stop Protocol Instruction During Pre-Licensing Courses. S.2426 would require instruction on driver responsibilities during traffic stops as part of pre-licensing courses. Traffic stops can be overwhelming for new and experienced drivers, and they should know proper etiquette and instructions on what to do when pulled over for a traffic stop.

Traffic Control Study New York City Department of Transportation

On Sunday March 12, Senator Persaud attended the NYPD Guyanese American Law Enforcement Association - GALEA Breakfast. 

On Saturday March 11, for the first time since March 2020 the Brooklyn Prayer breakfast was held at the El Caribe Country Club. Senator Persaud and staffer Sandy were in attendance. Nurses who were on the frontline during the Covid-19 pandemic were honored. 

On Saturday March 11, Staffer Jennifer represented Senator Persaud at the Justice in the Junction Roundtable Town Hall organized by Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, the Coalition for Community Advancement, Brooklyn Community Board 5 and other organizations. To ensure consensus at the MTA Broadway Junction Subway Station a dynamic group of stakeholders were in attendance including residents, community board members/representatives, and NYC DOT Commissioner Keith Bray.

 Summer Health Internship Program (SHIP)

Every summer, BQLI-AHEC coordinates the Summer Health Internship Program for junior and senior high school students that are interested in learning more about health careers. SHIP will take place from July 5- August 10, 2023. Students will be placed in internships in a healthcare setting, where they will report to Monday-Wednesday and will have guest speakers/field trips on Thursdays. These sites include Brooklyn Hospital Center, Maimonides Medical Center and Windsor Park Nursing Home. Students also receive a stipend for participating.
