LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM ALBANY

During the final week of 2022, Governor Hochul signed into law two bills sponsored by Senator Persaud:

Home Visiting Work Activities.  S. 9106 (Persaud) / A. 2549 (Fahy), signed to Chapter 819, Laws of 2022, will require that all parents applying for or receiving public assistance are provided with information about home visitation programs and services.  This new law will allow home visiting activities to count toward work activity requirements as well as establishes program eligibility for parents who are currently exempt from work activities.  Effective immediately.

Minimum Standards for Code Enforcement Personnel. S. 532-A (Persaud) / A. 276-A (Zebrowski), signed to Chapter 797, Laws of 2022, requires the Secretary of State to enact regulations regarding code enforcement to include mandatory training, continuing education and maintaining necessary certifications. The bill would also prohibit continued employment for code enforcement personnel where required certifications and credentials are suspended, revoked, or not renewed.  Effective date: April 27, 2023.

-If you or someone you know qualifies, you may apply for SNAP (food stamps), Cash Assistance, and Medicaid renewal all at the same time here.

-For seniors aged 60+ NYC Department for the Aging (DFTA)  provides home delivered meals. You can access them online or call 311 for support, you also can call 212-244-6469 to see if you qualify direct delivery.

-If you are not currently receiving any food benefit (such as Meals on Wheels or SNAP), are unable to get to a grocery store, and do not have anyone to help you, you may qualify for NYC Food Delivery Assistance.

-CityHarvest offers free food every other week across NYC, you can find a location near you here.

NYC Public Schools Enhance 3,000 Special Education Seats Across 65 Early Childhood Providers, Adding 400 New Seats  

Additional Expansion Expected to Open Enough Preschool Seats This Spring to Serve All Children Living with Disabilities   

NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Education (DOE) Chancellor David C. Banks today announced an expansion of early childhood education special-education seats across the five boroughs, in partnership with community-based providers, that will provide an early childhood education special-education seat for every child living with a disability by the spring of 2023.

“This is wonderful news for families, particularly those who now won’t struggle to find a quality early childhood program for children with special needs. Every child deserves an opportunity for inspiration and cultivation of knowledge. “

On Thursday December 29, Senator Persaud also had an exciting time at the "Intergroup Luncheon" hosted by JCC of Canarsie. This event allowed for seniors and youth of the community to engage in live music, great food, and face to face interaction. Thanks to Rabbi Avrohom Hecht for coordinating the event.

 On Thursday December 29, Senator Persaud attended the NYPD 63rd Precinct Community Council's final 2022 general meeting.

Senator Persaud previously met Officer Edwin Cruz when he was an intern in the NY State Assembly prior to joining NYPD.

On Wednesday December 28, Senator Persaud attended an informational meeting with NYC Department of Youth and Community Development Commissioner Keith Howard (Pictured above). The event was hosted by Rabbi Avrohom Hecht and JCC Canarsie. Initiatives were outlined and resources were offered. As Chairperson of the Senate's Social Services Committee, I will continue to advocate for funding for SYEP, after school programs and others to keep our youth engaged and connected.
