Every April 7, the World Health Organization celebrates its formation on April 7, 1948. Sixty-One countries signed the day it formed. First proposed in 1945 by officials from Brazil and China the creation of an international health organization that is all encompassing and independent from any government powers. Since 1950, World Health Day uses different themes annually selected by the WHO Director General. These themes extend beyond World Health Day into our everyday lives. The thing to remember is World Health Day brings us together to reflect on our own health. This conversation can help reduce the stigma associated with illness and lead to more people seeking support and treatment.

Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim April 2023, as Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month in the State of New York. Esophageal cancer is one of the fastest growing cancer diagnoses in the United States.  Sixteen Thousand One Hundred Twenty people will die from esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer kills one American every 36 minutes each day. This cancer is among the deadliest of cancers, with less than one in five patients surviving five years.

As a result of this growing health crisis, Senator Persaud understands the difference that improvements in prevention, early detection and treatment strategies, will enhance the health and well-being of all Americans, and is sponsoring Senate resolution J224 to raise awareness about this ongoing cancer threat.

Traffic Control Study New York City Department of Transportation

The Department recently completed its study regarding the need for additional traffic controls at the intersection of New Lots and Alabama Avenues. We're on the Move

On Wednesday April 5, staffer Jennifer represented Senator Persaud at the Brooklyn Scholars Charter Inaugural Parent Resource Fair. This was an excellent opportunity to share valuable information with parents as they attend the 2023 Spring Parent Teacher Conference.

On Tuesday April 4, staffer Christine attended a business networking breakfast at Woodzy Bar & Restaurant in Brooklyn hosted by Community Board 17 Commerce Commitee. This event gave community business owners and entrepreneurs the chance to network with various city agencies that provide resources to help their business from the starting idea through the process of fruition. 

On Tuesday April 4, Staffers Jonathan and Jennifer represented Senator Persaud at the NYPD 69th Precinct (Brooklyn) Community Council in person Job Fair in Partnership with the Hebrew Educational Society (H.E.S.), Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, and other elected officials which was a tremendous success! Both Jonthan and Jennifer had a very productive time greeting attendees, helping to move the massive lines smoothly along, assisting with registration, and sharing resource packets at the welcome table. 

On Monday April 3, Senator Persaud was represented by Staffer Jennifer at the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance - NYC Federal Farm Bill Listening Session, held in partnership with the NYC Human Resources Administration Department of Social Services. The Farm Bill is the primary federal legislation that governs the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as well as an array of agricultural and food programs. The Farm Bill is scheduled to be reauthorized by Congress in 2023.

On Sunday April 2, Staffer Sandy and volunteer Kamla represented Senator Persaud at the Bridge Multicultural and Advocacy Project event. This was an ecumenical celebration of love and oneness. This event was meant to foster unity amongst all people. The sentiment echoed throughout the evening by the various speakers was, "what unites us is far greater than what divides us". 

On Sunday April 2, Senator Persaud and Staffer Sandy attended the Hebron Baptist Church Family Plam Sunday Service. Everyone in attendance listened to a powerful and timely message delivered by Pastor Timothy P. Taylor. 

On Saturday April 1, Senator Persaud and Staffer Sandy joined Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, DA Eric Gonzalez, LaRay Brown- One Brooklyn Health System , representatives of Sun River Health, Alpha School and others for a shredding and resource event. Congressman Jeffries presented a check for $1.8 million in federal funds through the community project funding process to Sun River Health and The Alpha School. These funds will be used to upgrade the facility and add additional healthcare services.
The construction will bring approximately 150 jobs and the upgraded facility will add approximately 168 permanent jobs.  

On Thursday March 30, Staffer Jenniferr represented Senator Persaud the NYPD NCO 1st Quarter Build the Block Meeting. The meeting was led by NCO Sergeant Brian Maher, who was happy to report that there is an overall decrease in crime but asked the community to continue to report overall concerns. He also gave crime prevention tips about how to prevent the catalytic converter from being stolen.

Summer Rising is free and open to any NYC student currently in kindergarten through grade 8. The program will begin July 5, and will run Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the months of July and August. Students will be provided with free breakfast, lunch, and snack. Summer Rising will run for six weeks for all students, with a seventh week of enrichment for students in grades K–5. Families can apply at nyc.gov/SummerRising between April 17 and May 1.
