Dear Neighbors,
I was excited to get back up to Albany for the commencement of the 2024 NYS Legislative Session.
During our first full week of the session, New York heard from Governor Kathy Hochul as she delivered her State of the State address (Read full address here). I applaud the governor's dedication to advancing initiatives for mental health and substance use disorders, which demonstrates a concern for the well-being of our communities. I eagerly anticipate the legislature will collaborate with her to establish a robust and responsive framework for support and recovery during this session.
The Governor's priorities in the areas of child care underscore the critical importance of addressing the immediate needs of our children, spanning from early education to high school. I hope this signals a more substantial investment in expanding childcare, which is an integral component of revitalizing our economy. Hochul also emphasized the importance of statewide funding for reading instruction and the accessibility of mental health services for all students, including expanding mental health clinics in schools. Furthermore, she outlined plans to attract New York's high-achieving students to attend selective SUNY campuses and to make the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) a universal requirement for high school students. Additionally, her commitment to transforming CUNY and SUNY into hubs for artificial intelligence and ethics was highlighted in her speech.
I was gratified to hear the Governor's acknowledgment that taxes are not the primary factor driving families away from New York. The true challenges lie in the lack of affordability, with soaring costs in housing, child care, and health care pushing many households deeper into poverty and compelling people to leave the state. It is imperative that we collaborate to make New York a more livable place for its residents, which requires generating revenue for investments in schools, childcare, and affordable housing.
I look forward to Governor Hochul's budget address next week to gain insight into the specifics of how these proposals and the needs of New Yorkers will be funded. This legislative session holds the promise of great productivity, and I look forward to representing all of you well.
Embracing Dr. King's Legacy: A Commitment to Unity & Community Action
Once again, we are commemorating a great leader and visionary, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and celebrating the spirit of unity, the fight for civil rights and community that he so ardently championed throughout his life.
Dr. King believed in the power of ordinary people to bring about extraordinary change. This belief entails taking personal responsibility for the well-being of our neighborhoods and their residents. It's about recognizing that our actions can make a significant difference, no matter how modest they may seem. Today, we embody this spirit, and I eagerly anticipate joining you in extending our commitment to personal and community responsibility beyond a federal holiday, letting it guide our everyday interactions as we work towards a just and equitable society.
As the great Martin Luther King Jr., who was considered a radical in his time, once stated, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” What are we all doing for those in our neighborhoods and communities who need our help? These words remind us of the essence of our shared humanity and the interconnectedness of our lives. It is a call to action that transcends time and place and resonates deeply with me and my staff. And in a world often divided by differences, I assure you that I will stand united with you by that shared purpose: to make our community more just and equitable, safer, and more vibrant!
Peace & blessings,
RJ
