Support for Firefighters and EMS Workers
 

For nearly 20 years, New York's Volunteer Firefighters' and Ambulance Workers' Tax Credit has remained unchanged.

I was proud to support and pass S.6233-A, legislation that increases this tax credit for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.

If signed into law by the Governor, the bill will increase the credit from $200 to $800 for individuals and from $400 to $1,600 for married couples filing jointly. It will also allow eligible volunteers to receive both the tax credit and a local property tax exemption.

A Win for School Districts and Taxpayers
 

After intense advocacy alongside local school districts, transportation officials, parents, and taxpayers, we successfully secured a five-year delay of New York’s electric school bus mandate as part of this year’s state budget.

This is an important win for our schools and communities. School leaders across our region made it clear that the mandate would place significant costs on taxpayers and that current technology does not reliably meet the needs of every district.

 

While this delay provides much-needed relief, more work remains. I will continue fighting for policies that give local school districts the flexibility to make transportation decisions that are practical, affordable, and in the best interest of students.

Residents in rural communities deserve access to quality healthcare close to home. Unfortunately, this year’s state budget failed to do enough to address the workforce shortages, EMS funding challenges, mental health needs, and maternity care concerns impacting regions like ours.

During the budget debate on healthcare, I asked specific questions about funding and resources for areas outside of our major cities. The Chair of the Health Committee acknowledged that the budget does not address these needs.

A budget of this size should do more to strengthen access to care, support emergency first responders/ambulance providers, and recruit and retain healthcare professionals.

Some moments you don't forget.

On May 16th, Honor Flight Rochester made history when it launched its first ever all-female mission. Fifty-nine women who served across every branch of our military boarded a plane for Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II memorial and other monuments.

I was honored to be at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport when they came home. The welcome they received was heartfelt and everything they deserved. 

Thank you to the women veterans for your service and sacrifice. And thank you Honor Flight Rochester for celebrating these American heroes.
