Fighting Harmful Algal Blooms
 

Protecting our lakes for future generations means taking action in Albany. That's why I co-sponsored the Harmful Algal Bloom Monitoring and Prevention Act (S.1833-A).

Harmful algal blooms threaten the waters our families rely on for drinking, recreation, agriculture, and tourism. They can also be toxic to people, pets, and wildlife.

This legislation would create a coordinated statewide system for monitoring and tracking blooms, establish a public database of outbreaks and proven prevention strategies, and create a grant program to help local communities, nonprofits, and academic institutions deploy the most effective mitigation efforts.

Our lakes are a treasure, and this bill would give New York the tools to protect them for generations to come.
Marion's Michael Herlan Named a
NYS Senate Outstanding Educator
 

Congratulations to Mr. Michael Herlan of Marion Central School District, a New York State Senate Outstanding Educator! I opened the award ceremonies to present this recognition, which honors teachers who make a lasting difference in the lives of their students.

Marion Superintendent Dr. Ellen Lloyd and Jr./Sr. High Principal Shane Dehn recommended Mr. Herlan for this award, citing his dedication to students both inside and outside the classroom. As a French and Social Studies teacher, Mr. Herlan helps students understand history, government, language, and the world beyond their own community. These are lessons that prepare young people to become informed citizens and active participants in our communities. He also serves his colleagues as President of the Marion Teachers Association.

Outstanding educators do more than deliver lessons. They encourage students, challenge them, and help them see what they're capable of achieving. Mr. Herlan has done that for many years. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for your service to the students and families of Marion.
