Monthly Newsletter
January 7, 2025
Dear Friend,

Happy New Year!  I hope this year brings you hope, peace and joy and plenty of great opportunities!

The 2025 NYS legislative session officially opens at noon this Wednesday, January 8th. While I am looking forward to getting back to our State Capitol and the legislative business at hand, there is a ceremony that occurs just before session begins that is very important and meaningful to me. The Oath of Office.  Following every election, I look forward to standing before the public, with Gary beside me, and making the following commitment to each and every person I represent:

"I do solemnly swear that I will support the constitution of the United States of America and the constitution of the State of New York, and that I will faithfully discharge, according to the best of my ability, the duties of the position of NY State Senator, so help me God."

As session gets underway, I will continue to use this newsletter as a means to provide legislative updates and information about district-wide businesses, people and events. Over the next few months, you will receive a request to complete my annual Constituent Survey and have an opportunity to nominate a local Veteran for our Veterans Recognition program.

Hearing from you has always been and will always be important to me. If I can ever be of assistance to you, please let me know.

Warmest regards,

Pam

Original Candy Kitchen, Lyons National Bank Join Historic Business Preservation Registry

The New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry hit a milestone in 2024: over 200 businesses are now listed in the registry, which recognizes New York-based businesses over 50 years old that have made significant contributions to their communities.

In December, two 54th District businesses were added to the registry – Original Candy Kitchen and Lyons National Bank!

The Original Candy Kitchen first opened its doors in 1890 as the Williamson Candy Kitchen. Owner George Boosalis, a Greek immigrant, laid the foundation for a business that has become an enduring symbol of tradition and quality in the Williamson community. It is now owned and operated by Mary and Peter Anagnostopoulos and remains in the Boosalis family after four generations. This beloved local treasure exemplifies the timeless values of personal service and heartfelt care for customers that have defined its success for over a century.

Lyons National Bank has stood as a pillar of trust and integrity, setting the standard for successful community banking for over 170 years. As a true regional partner, LNB has played a pivotal role in enriching the culture and fostering the prosperity of the Finger Lakes region. Their dedication to supporting local businesses and championing the economic well-being of our communities continues to be a driving force in ensuring the stability and growth of the region we call home.

We Need Realistic, Affordable Energy Solutions
The State Energy Planning Board has started the process of updating the state's energy plan for its clean energy transition.

Read my letter to the board sharing my recommendations and concerns. These include the reliability of the electric grid, the readiness of alternative energy sources and infrastructure, the impact to housing and economic development, and the cost to ratepayers, businesses and schools.

I will continue to advocate for realistic timelines, and reasonable and affordable solutions that support diverse energy sources and protect consumer choice.

New Bills Signed Into Law

The end of each year always brings either the approval or veto of legislation by Governor Hochul. I am proud to say that she signed two important pieces of legislation I co-sponsored.

Milk added to Nourish NY

During the 2024 budget hearings, I sought clarification that farmers can sell whole and 2% milk through the Nourish New York program, which allows food banks to purchase surplus products from New York farmers and bring locally-sourced healthy foods to more people in our communities. The Governor signed S8690 on December 21, 2024 which adds whole and 2% milk to Nourish New York - good for our families and good for our dairy farms!

Parkinson's Disease Registry

Earlier in December the Governor also signed S4674A into law, creating a Parkinson's disease registry to help identify and support high-risk groups and share important data to assist researchers in managing and treating this disease. Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurodegenerative disease in the world. I was proud to co-sponsor this important piece of legislation which was the result of the advocacy of The Michael J. Fox Foundation and many families and caregivers throughout our region and state.

Business Spotlight: L-Tron

Continuing my district-wide business tour, I had the opportunity to visit L-Tron Corporation in Victor. L-Tron is a hardware and software company that focuses on data collection automation in the private and public sectors.

Some of their local partners include the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Monroe County and Ontario County Emergency Management.

L-Tron does groundbreaking work by streamlining technology used by law enforcement, fire departments, the public sector and manufacturers.

Thank you to Trevor DiMarco, President & CEO of L-Tron, for a firsthand look at your innovative work.
