LIBERTY MEDALS TO FIVE HEROIC POLICE OFFICERS

I recently awarded state Senate Liberty Medals to five police officers for their bravery and heroism in saving a young man’s life in April. Pleasantville Police Sergeant Juan Garcia and Officer Erin Holly, Westchester County Police Detective Rob Barber and Mount Pleasant detectives Walter O’Keefe and Lauren Valentino prevented a young man from jumping from a Saw Mill River Parkway overpass. I presented the medals to the five officers at the Mount Pleasant Town Hall.

PUTNAM DEPUTY HONORED FOR HIS HEROISM

Putnam County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Osika was recently named as the Senate District 40 First Responder of the Month. The father of four (including identical triplets) was recognized for saving the life of a suicidal man who was poised to jump off of a bridge over state Route 6 near Interstate 84.

QUARTER MILLION DOLLARS FOR NEW CARMEL PARK

I have secured a $250,000 grant for the Town of Carmel's new Airport Park. The money will help build an adaptive use playground for children with differing abilities and a pavilion that can be used by all families visiting the park.

$200,000 FOR PACE UNIVERSITY STUDENT VETERANS CENTER

I recently announced that I’ve secured $200,000 for Pace University in Pleasantville to build a Student Veterans Center. The new facility will  give former members of the armed services their own gathering place where they can socialize and learn about veterans benefits that they can tap into.

$125,000 FOR BUCHANAN VETERANS PARK PAVILION

I was delighted to announce that rehab work can begin at the Buchanan Veterans Park Pavilion thanks to $125,000 in funding that I secured for restoration of this popular community landmark. The funding will help ensure the restoration of the pavilion to its original glory so it can be used for generations to come.

HAWTHORNE FIRE DEPARTMENT INSPECTION

I was invited to the annual inspection of fire apparatus and facilities at the Hawthorne Fire Department. Thank you to the members of this department, and to all our firefighters, for their dedication and bravery.

VISITING THE IRISH FESTIVAL IN PEEKSKILL

I enjoyed the great marching tunes of the Westchester police Emerald Society pipes and drums band on my visit to the 11th Annual Hudson Valley Irish Fest. The event featured an array of vendors and numerous exhibits of Celtic culture. I presented a New York State proclamation to Hudson Valley Irish Center and Fest Founding Chair Dan Dennehy.

HOPPING TO THE SENIOR SOCK HOP IN BEEKMAN

I joined Beekman Supervisor Mary Covucci and Councilwoman Sharon Worham to serve lunch to seniors during the Beekman Senior Sock Hop.

CELEBRATED HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Joining young people from the Peekskill Hispanic Community Corp. Peekskill Councilmember Colin Smith and Deputy Mayor Kathleen Talbot  joined in the fun during the city's Hispanic Festival.

To mark Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15), I presented New York State certificates of accomplishment to 16 distinguished members of the Latin community. I also presented special New York State Proclamations to Norma Pereira and Wilfredo Morel for their hard work and dedication to the Hispanic community and for the benefit of the 40th Senate District. Thank you to Dinora Pacheco and the Peekskill Hispanic Community Corp. for the honor of being named as Grand Marshal of the Peekskill Hispanic Festival.
